Water Programs
Everyday 6,000 children die from a lack of clean water. You can help save their lives
Rotary works with Pure Water for the World, Inc.
Pure Water began in 1994 when a Rotarian from Brattleboro, Vermont volunteered to help out in a small Salvadoran village. This success of delivering potable water to the rural villages led to the establishment of Pure Water for the World, a non-profit organization, in 1997. Pure Water’s goal is to improve the health of children who suffer from and frequently die of intestinal diseases that result from drinking contaminated water. With the help of many Rotary Clubs worldwide, Pure Water has been able to help children in El Salvador and Honduras lead healthier lives.
The Filter
Pure Water provides communities, households, primary schools, and rural health clinics with slow-sand water filters—lifelong filters that are extremely effective at reducing waterborne pathogens. One filter is sufficient for a family of six in Honduras. Producing these filters also provides employment for locals because they are made in the country in which they are used. By using the naturally safe bacteria in the water to produce a “Biofilter” at the top, the filters simply require minimal upkeep by the family.
How can you help?
The North Whidbey Island Sunrise Rotary Club would like to sponsor filters for an entire village, a remote village outside of Danli, Honduras.
A typical village complete with 130 community water basins costs about $32,000. To supply the 150 filters only is about $10,000. Our goal at this time is to supply the filters. We need your help.
Any donation is appreciated, but only $150 buys a filter for an entire family in Honduras.
